Detergent Ingredients:

Sodium carbonate
Sodium carbonate, also known as soda ash, has been used for many years, and is actually considered a safe food additive.  While we would not recommend ingesting it, we do feel safe using is as a detergent.  It is a very safe, and effective, stain remover and degreaser.

Sodium percarbonate
Sodium percarbonate is the common name of solid/granular hydrogen peroxide. Compared with chlorine bleaching chemicals that harm our skin, and the environment, sodium percarbonate is safe and environmentally friendly.  Sodium Percarbonate dissolves into water rapidly to release oxygen and provides powerful cleaning, bleaching, stain removal, and deodorizing capabilities. It brightens colors and prevents fabric from becoming yellowed or darkened. Sodium percarbonate is also effective as a disinfectant on both bacteria and viruses.

Sodium
We use food grade sodium that is free from all additives and flowing agents.

Green Earth Naturals handmade soaps
Green Earth Naturals Simply Soap is our handmade cold processed lye soap.  We use our Goat’s Milk Lavender for the laundry detergent because it smells so clean and pure.  Please see our soap ingredient page for more information on our soap.

Soap Ingredients:

Green Earth Natural’s Soap contains only natural and organic ingredients.  You will not find any artificial colors or fragrances in our soap.  Instead, we strive to use only the best ingredients including organic oils, organic unrefined shea and cocoa butters, raw organic milk from pastured cows and goats, handmade coconut milk, therapeutic grade essential oils, and natural clays, salts and more!  Please read below for more details on each of our ingredients.

Oils
Our bars all contain organic saponified oils of castor, coconut, olive, palm kernel, palm (sustainably harvested), and high oleic sunflower oils.  Some of our bars also contain organic, unrefined shea butter and cocoa butter.

Castor Oil
Not only does this oil help our soap have a very stable lather, but it is also incredibly rich in antioxidants, minerals, proteins, and vitamin E.   Additionally, this cold pressed, organic oil has germicidal and disinfectant properties that are used to treat skin ulcers, usually those which are caused by bacterial or fungal infections. We also use castor oil in our shampoo bars because it can help to protect the scalp and hair from fungal and microbial infection which can cause hair loss.

Coconut Oil
Organic coconut oil provides soap with a wonderful fluffy lather that we just love.  However, its benefits extend to a wide range of skin issues.  Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids such as caprylic, capric, and lauric acid.  These fatty acids destroy bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and even yeast!  Fortifying the skin with a natural antimicrobial is an effortless way to protect against infections.

Olive Oil
We highly value the organic olive oil that we use in our products.  It is packed with antioxidants, and can help delay the formation of wrinkles, soften and smooth the skin, and  help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.  Olive oil can also help to trap in moisture.  The emollients in this oil will help to give the skin a silky-smooth texture.

Palm Kernel Oil
Organic palm kernel oil used in our soaps makes for a wonderfully hard bar with excellent lather.  Hard bars of soap last so much longer which is one reason we like to include this oil.  Additionally, palm kernel oil is moisturizing, and provides a layer of protection on the skin.

Palm Oil
Palm oil contains the hard to find toctrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family. Toctrienols have been proven to be incredibly effective in preventing aging and damage from free radicals. Toctrienols are able to penetrate deep into the skin’s layers to enable healing and protection.

Recently, it has come to our knowledge that palm oil is often not sustainable and many forests are being torn down because of the demand.  Thankfully, we found a source of sustainable palm oil.  This excerpt is from the company we purchase our palm oil from.

“Regarding your question of sustainable palm production, our Organic palm is from South America, grown in a mixed species environment with legume under story to provide nitrogen specific plants to host, and feed beneficial insects. Residue from the oil pressings is also returned to the groves to provide nutrients. The farm is in a region of the Amazon that was cleared by previous owners 30-40 years ago, and the reestablishment of a forest crop has brought back many species of birds and other plants and animals. While not as diverse as native Rain forest, it is a vast improvement over grasslands. All our conventional Palm suppliers are members of RSPO as well.

We are conscious of where we purchase our oils, and will continue to seek conscientious growers, and producers.”

High Oleic Sunflower Oil
Our organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil is from sunflower seeds cultivated to be more stable and resistant to rancidity. The high oleic content of this sunflower oil makes it effective in cell regeneration and it is therefore highly recommended for mature or damaged skin.

Shea Butter
Our organic shea butter is unrefined and extracted from trees in Ghana, Africa.  We really love this shea butter because it is so incredibly creamy and nourishing, and provides such amazing benefits to the skin and hair.  For thousands of years, shea butter just as this has been used for its hydrating and healing properties.  Shea butter is easily absorbed into the skin so it immediately starts to replenish and repair dry and damaged skin.  It also promotes skin elasticity, helps minimize scars and stretch marks,  and prevents wrinkles and fine lines without clogging pores or leaving you greasy.  Shea butter is also very healing for eczema sufferers.  Because shea butter is mostly unsaponifiable, most of it remains as a moisturizing oil in our soap to nourish and cleanse your skin.

Cocoa Butter
This organic cocoa butter still smells like chocolate!  We have enjoyed soaping with this cocoa butter because it is so rich.  This butter acts as a barrier for your skin against all types of environmental elements. Cocoa butter makes a wonderfully hard bar of soap that smooths and soothes dry skin, helps to prevent and treat scars and stretch marks, and even has been reported to help relieve psoriasis.

Milk
Many of our bars contain skin nourishing organic raw milk from pastured cows and goats.  It has been well known throughout history that milk has excellent skin nurturing, moisturizing and healing properties.  It is even believed that Cleopatra used to bathe herself in milk quite frequently.  Milk contains many amino acids, vitamins and minerals which are easily absorbed into the skin.  Milk also contains a very gentle cleanser in the form of lactic acid.  Another naturally occurring acid in milk is a bet hydroxyl acid which acts as an excellent skin exfoliant.  This exfoliation removed old skin cells to make way for the newer, more vibrant skin underneath.

Essential oils
We also use 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils in all of our bars.  These essential oils not only offer a natural fragrance, but they are also nourishing for your skin.

Rhassoul clay
The Rhassoul clay bars are excellent for both bathing and shaving.  The clay is an excellent skin conditioner and offers slip to a razor thereby reducing razor burn.  Rhassoul clay, or Moroccan lava clay, was used in ancient Rome and Egypt by nobility.  Rhassoul clay is much more absorbent than other clays.  Rhassoul is also the most mineral rich of all the clays.  It is high in trace minerals such as silica, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, and sodium, making it truly one of the finest treasures for pampering the skin.  These minerals make the clay highly detoxifying as they can actually exchange themselves for toxic compounds like metals in the skin.  So the clay not only works to remove impurities from your skin, it also replaces them with nourishing trace minerals. In clinical tests, Rhassoul has been shown to aid in

  • Reducing dryness, flakiness, and itchiness often associated with psoriasis
  • Improving skin clarity
  • Improving skin elasticity / firmness
  • Improving skin texture
  • Removing surface oil and oil from inside and around clogged pores
  • Removing dead skin layers, resulting in a general smoothing of the surface skin

Organic, raw, unfiltered honey
Honey is another ingredient that we highly value in our soap.  We use the same organic honey in our soap that we cook with in our home.  Honey is one of the oldest beauty care ingredients and people throughout history have used honey to nourish their skin.  Honey is well known for its humectant and antimicrobial qualities.  As a natural humectant, honey draws moisture to the skin and also helps the skin to retain that moisture.  Honey’s unique chemical composition makes it an effective antimicrobial agent.  Honey has even been used effectively in treating horrible bacterial skin infections with more success than traditional medicines.

Organic, freshly ground oatmeal
Oatmeal gently soothes and protect your skin.  We freshly grind organic oats for each batch of our soap.  We love to use oatmeal because it can whisk away dead cells, irritation, and redness, leaving soft glowing skin behind.  Oatmeal has been used for centuries for its skin-soothing powers. Some of the many benefits of oatmeal include:

  • Dryness fighting: Oats contain polysaccharides, which become gelatinous in water and leave a fine protective film on the skin, preventing dull, flakey dryness.
  • Moisturizing: Oats are full of healthy, lubricating fats.
  • Defense building: The proteins in oatmeal help maintain the skin’s natural barrier function, which is what ensures that the world outside the skin stays out, and what’s inside the skin stays in.
  • Pore cleansing: Oatmeal does not interfere with the cleaning ability of soap.  In fact, oats are filled with natural cleansers (called saponins) that gently remove dirt and oil from the pores.
  • Reducing inflammation:  Oatmeal contains something called phenols which provide its anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Exfoliation:  Oatmeal is a very mild exfoliating agent.  Because it is so gentle, it is safe to use on sensitive areas like the face.
  • pH buffer:  Our skin has a complex pH system.  Skin has an acid mantle which sits on top of the skin and protects it from the environment.  This mantle has a pH of about 5.  Sometimes products, like commercial detergents, are too alkaline and can throw off the pH of your skin thereby aggravating certain skin conditions.  Oatmeal acts as a pH buffer which helps correct the pH of your skin.
  • Anti-itch:  Oatmeal has been used for ages to sooth the skin and help relieve all types of worrisome itching.
